Comparison of demand pattern calibration in water distribution networks with geographic and non-geographic parameterization
Demands are one of the most uncertain parameters in water distribution network models. A good calibration of the model demands leads to better results when using the model for any purpose. A demand pattern calibration methodology that uses a priori information has been developed for calibrating the behavior of demand groups. In cities, similar demand behaviors are distributed all over the network, contrary to smaller villages where demands are clearly sectorised in residential neighborhoods, commercial zones and industrial sectors. In this work, demand pattern calibration has a final use for leakage detection and isolation. Detecting a leakage in a pattern that covers nodes spread all over the network makes the isolation unfeasible. Besides, demands in the same zone may be more similar due to the common pressure of the area rather than for the type of contract. A demand pattern calibration methodology is applied to a real network with synthetic non-geographic demands for calibrating geographic demand patterns. The results are compared with a previous work where the calibrated patterns were the original non-geographic onesPeer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Nanomechanics of Langmuir-Blodgett films
mil·limètriques amb resolució lateral a escala micromètrica.
substrat pla (pel·lícules LB) i poden estudiar-se a escala nanomètrica
The topographical and nanomechanical characterization of
molecular films is an important issue due to the increasing interest
in this kind of 2-dimensional structure, both from a scientific
and technological point of view. In particular, Langmuir and
Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films have been widely studied as it is
possible to control the area per molecule in the layer, with the
consequent control over the sample nanostructure. Langmuir
films can be characterized at the air-water interphase by using
surface pressure-area isotherms and Brewster Angle Microscopy
(BAM). Surface pressure measurements provide information
on the films as a whole and BAM provides optical images
of areas in the millimetric range with lateral resolution on the
micrometric scale. Langmuir films can be transferred onto an
atomically flat substrate and the transferred films (LB films) can
be studied in the nanometric range using Scanning Probe Microscopies
(SPMs). Of these, Atomic Force Microscopy provides
topographical information, while Lateral Force Microscopy
and Force Spectroscopy provide information about the
nanotribological and nanomechanical properties of the films.
These techniques, when applied to the study of mixed films,
provide information about miscibility, phase separation, domain
structure and mechanical properties. In this respect,
SPMs can provide information at a nanometric level that it is
not available using BAM. Thanks to the possibility of controlling
the film surface pressure, correlation between sample nanostructure
and nanomechanics can be established
Uncertainty effect on leak localisation in a DMA
The leak localisation methodologies based on data and models are affected by both uncertainties in the model and in the measurements. This uncertainty should be quantified so that its effect on the localisation methods performance can be estimated. In this paper, a model-based leak localisation methodology is applied to a real District Metered Area using synthetic data. In the generation process of the data, uncertainty in demands is taken into account. This uncertainty was estimated so that it can justify the uncertainty observed in the real measurements. The leak localisation methodology consists, first, in generating the set of possible measurements, obtained by Monte Carlo Simulation under a certain leak assumption and considering uncertainty, and second, in falsifying sets of nodes using the correlation with a leak residual model in order to signal a set of possible leaky nodes. The assessment is done by means of generating the confusion matrix with a Monte Carlo approach.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

The main aim of this project consists in the automatic regulation of a valve “anti surge” from a code written in Python that has the function to control the correct operation of a radial centrifugal compressor that finds in some surroundings of virtual simulation, specifically in UniSim.
This project gives continuation to a Work of End of Master of the school in which it achieved establish connection between the programs of UniSim and Python, where achieved do a series of functions, specifically: open the case of simulation, read values of the simulation in the code from UniSim and modify values of the simulation from Python.
For this work have studied the different types of failures that can produce in a compressor, of which has chosen to treat the phenomena of “surge” and “stone wall” that, although they are different are very related between them. For the realization of the work in yes by means of the values read in Python of the case of simulation, these are treated by means of a mathematical model which determines in that zone of work finds the compressor, if it finds in zone of work does not act, however, the find in zones of work no wished, by means of the code written in Python regulates the valve anti arises of the case of simulation to go back to carry the compressor to the zone of correct work. Besides, it has implemented a neural network to improve the efficiency of the process, since when implementing this network, the system works of form faster and efficient.
In the ending of this work has obtained the system of regulation of the valve anti arises of satisfactory form, as well as of the neural network. Also, it has made a guide of user so that in future works related with the subject was easier and fast comprise the operation of the utilization of the code before putting to program.
Parameterization And Sampling Design For Water Distribution Networks Demand Calibration Using The Singular Value Decomposition: Application To A Real Network
The availability of a good hydraulic model increases the reliability of the results of methodologies using it. Thus the calibration of the model is a previous step that has to be done. The most uncertain parameters of the model are demands due to their constant variability. However, calibrating these demands requires a high computational cost that can be reduced by redefining the unknown parameters from demands to demand patterns. Besides, the number and location of the used sensors is highly correlated with the definition of such patterns. This paper presents a methodology for parameterizing and selecting sensors using the information from the singular value decomposition of the water distribution network sensitivity matrix
Spin Needlets for Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Data Analysis
Scalar wavelets have been used extensively in the analysis of Cosmic
Microwave Background (CMB) temperature maps. Spin needlets are a new form of
(spin) wavelets which were introduced in the mathematical literature by Geller
and Marinucci (2008) as a tool for the analysis of spin random fields. Here we
adopt the spin needlet approach for the analysis of CMB polarization
measurements. The outcome of experiments measuring the polarization of the CMB
are maps of the Stokes Q and U parameters which are spin 2 quantities. Here we
discuss how to transform these spin 2 maps into spin 2 needlet coefficients and
outline briefly how these coefficients can be used in the analysis of CMB
polarization data. We review the most important properties of spin needlets,
such as localization in pixel and harmonic space and asymptotic uncorrelation.
We discuss several statistical applications, including the relation of angular
power spectra to the needlet coefficients, testing for non-Gaussianity on
polarization data, and reconstruction of the E and B scalar maps.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
On the usage of GRECOSAR, an orbital polarimetric SAR simulator of complex targets, to vessel classification studies
This paper presents a synthetic aperture radar (SAR)
simulator that is able to generate polarimetric SAR (POLSAR)
and polarimetric inverse SAR data of complex targets. It solves
the electromagnetic problem via high-frequency approximations,
such as physical optics and the physical theory of diffraction,
with notable computational efficiency. In principle, any orbital
monostatic sensor working at any band, resolution, and operating
mode can be modeled. To make simulations more realistic, the
target’s bearing and speed are considered, and for the particular
case of vessels, even the translational and rotational movements
induced by the sea state. All these capabilities make the simulator
a powerful tool for supplying large amounts of data with precise
scenario information and for testing future sensor configurations.
In this paper, the usefulness of the simulator on vessel classification
studies is assessed. Several simulated polarimetric images are
presented to analyze the potentialities of coherent target decompositions
for classifying complex geometries, thus basing an operational
algorithm. The limitations highlighted by the results suggest
that other approaches, like POLSAR interferometry, should be
explored.Peer Reviewe
Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Comparison of demand calibration in water distribution networks using pressure and flow sensors
Water distribution network models are used by water companies in a wide range of applications. A good calibration of these models is required in order to improve the confidence of the application results. Pressure and flow measurements are the main source of information when calibrating a hydraulic model. The selection of both the type and location of the sensors is crucial to guarantee a good calibration. This paper describes a sensor placement methodology based on the analysis of pressure and flow sensitivity using the Singular Value Decomposition. A comparison of demand calibration in a real network with synthetic data is presented. Three sets of sensors are considered: pressure sensors, flow sensors, and a combination of both.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
